Passport Express was s automated Passport Control (APC) self-service kiosk system introduced at Washington Dulles International Airport to help international arrivals clear U.S. Customs more efficiently. Instead of filling out a paper customs form, eligible travelers could scan their passport, answer inspection questions on a touch screen, and receive a receipt to present to a CBP officer, significantly reducing processing times.
Design
The Passport Express identity draws visual inspiration directly from official passport design and international travel systems. The color palette uses gold and navy blue, colors commonly found on U.S. and international passports. This color combination also conveys authenticity, authority, and trust. Minion was selected as the primary typeface because it is traditionally used in U.S. passports, reinforcing familiarity and credibility, while a bold sans-serif was paired with it for “Express” to introduce contrast and a modern, expedited feel. The extended horizontal stroke of the “E” running through the word visually represents speed and continuity, emphasizing the expedite process. The airplane icon is shaped to function as a forward-pointing arrow, symbolizing progress, movement, and efficient international travel.
Impact
Although Passport Express is no longer active, it helped modernize the international arrival experience by reducing wait times and replacing paper customs forms with self-service kiosks. The project also included a series of on-site and digital ads that increased traveler awareness and adoption of the service at a critical decision point. Together, the service design and promotional materials supported smoother passenger flow and reduced congestion during peak arrival periods. The work contributed to a broader shift toward automated, user-centered airport and border-entry experiences.
